The case that rocked America - Review by Mark Daly
A Film review.

In 1959, Hokum Kansas, was a sleepy, conservative small town, god, guns, family values and farming. August 3, however changed all that when, Perry Edward Smith and Richard Hickcock came to town on a crime spree. They came looking for 10,000 dollars which they were told HW Cutler had in the house. HW Cutler had 40 dollars in the house. Smith Slashed Cutlers Throat and Shot in him in the side of the head and also Shot his young son in the basement in a similiar way, they went through the house and smith who was a talented artist, blasted the rest of the family in a similar way.
In Socially Liberal New York, Truman Capote had just Published his new book of short stories, called other voices other Rooms to great acclaim and had just adapted Breakfast at tiifanys which would star Peppard and Hepburn and was directed by Blake edwards.
Capote was working for the New York Times and His assitant was editor Nell Harper Lee. He was taken with the case and decided that this would be his next literary assignment. It would take 9 years of his Life and would in the end destroy his writing career, he never ever published another novel ever again and died of alcholic complications in 1984 in LA. Capote invented a new literary style. Faction. And hollywood owes huge debt of gratitude.
This film is both, quiet, powerfull and utterly compelling and the center of the movie of is a enormous performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman who stars and exec-produced, Hoffman is surrounded by an exemplary supportin cast inc Clifton Collins jr as Smith Mark Pellegrino as Hickcock, Catherine Keener as Harper Lee, Bob Balaban and Chris Cooper as Leading investigator. The Screenplay is by actor and writer Dan futterman.
Futterman and bennet Miller have been friends since Childhood and although this film was not easy to make, its rewards in terms of praise have been very high and rightly so. MIller does not steer away from showing you the voilence of Hickcock and smith or thier violent death by Hanging. Powerfull stuff and comes highly recommended. Next for Hoffman is Mission Impossible three opposite Tom Cruise, who has thankfully never won an oscar or is ever likely.
I havent said this in a while but you must see this film.
Capote gets a rating of: 5 - out of - 5
